November 2009

Dr. Joanne

Its been quite some time since I did photography, although the one thing that I have done very religiously inspite of everything is checking out Dr. Joanne's work. She is my favourite photographer on flickr.  I dont particularly think her work is conventionally beautiful or picturesque, and is rather dark in their subject as well as colours. But thats exactly what is so striking about her work. Her work is extremely thoughtful and says so much.  It's so amazing how she can talk her mind through pictures. And such well-captured ones, at that !

Most of her pictures are extremely surreal and even when they not, they are layered with meanings.
At times I just keep looking at her work, trying to find my own meaning in them.
This picture in particular is one of my favourites (its one of her fav. too).

Dr. Joanne's work

I just love it because its not about fashion, and yet is so fashionable and stylish.  Well...its just that I cant help looking at every picture from a fashion and a stylist's point of view (a professional hazard I guess :) ), and I couldnt help writing about this one. What contrast in colours, love the red and pink background and what I find most interesting in this pic is 'the third leg'. What composition!  Its so inspiring.

The second pic. that I think is equally interesting is 'stares'.  Best way to put to use those lovely stockings. So stylish ! Dr. Joanne could have been a fashion photographer to say the least.

Revisiting Fashion 2009 : LFW Rehane

The year 2009 is coming to an end, the year that gave us its very first Men's Fashion week and ofcourse the Couture Week.  So what better time than this to revisit the year and see what it has given us in terms of fashion, besides the so many fashion weeks.

I had been going through the fashion weeks very religiously, keeping myself updated with all new, old and not so old designers.  But, never did I think of writing about them, for some strange reason.  Maybe I was finding it difficult catching up with the multiple fashion weeks.  But now, I guess I can relook at them in totality, and not one at a time, and finally write about my favourite designers and my favourite designs.

Lakme Fashion Week has been the forerunner of all fashion weeks in India.  And this year, it also celebrated its 10th Anniversary, with the old batch of designers showing their best.  Other than that, there were ofcourse the other designers showcasing their talent.  I have gone through each one of them, intepreting their work as per my aesthetics and sensibilities.

Rehane : What a  beautiful collection !  Great styling details and surface ornamentation.

Nachiket Barve : I'm a big fan of Nachiket's designs, which are so glamorous as well as elegant. His ability to combine unusual colours is incomparable. I love the balance that he is able to achieve in his designs inspite of using so many colours at the same time.

Imcha Imchen : Very strong sense of design direction accompanied with smart silhouettes and classy colours.  His north-eastern roots also come through very clearly through his designs.

Gauri & Nainika : A very interesting and pretty collection. Love the roses. The roses, the monochrome, and the high contrasts brought about by black & white, all these elements move so cohesively throughout the collection.

Digivjay Singh : I've always liked his organic collections. They are so macho and sharp and stylish, yet dont have a hard feel about them.  The flow of the garments and detailing imparts a very intereting feel to his garments, which is rare to find in men's wear clothes.

Aneeth Arora: I completely love her silhouettes and the interesting use of scarves.  She is one designer who has a very clear direction, a clear and an equally strong direction. The use of natural fabrics is exactly what makes her designs so glamorous. I love her sensibilities that come through so clear in the entire collection.
